Tomaree Summit Walk
One stairway. The best panorama on this coast.
The climb
161 vertical metres, entirely worth it
Tomaree Head guards the northern entrance to Port Stephens. The summit track is a stairway climb through coastal heath to a 161-metre lookout with the full marine park laid out beneath you: Yacaaba across the entrance, the islands, the bays, the dune line south, and on clear days the ships waiting outside the Heads.
It sits inside Tomaree National Park — the track is managed, the WWII gun emplacements at the top are the picnic-table-with-a-view nobody mentions, and the descent is faster than you expect.
- Grade: moderate — stairs the whole way, no scrambling.
- Time: roughly 40 minutes up at tour pace, 25 down.
- Bring: water, hat, and the shoes you would wear for real stairs.
In the day plan
Why the summit sits at midday
After the morning cruise you want the walk before the dunes — legs are fresher, the midday light flattens the bay for photography, and the top of Tomaree is the natural lunch-stop viewpoint. The walk is optional inside the full day; if the stairs are not for your group, the foreshore makes a worthy consolation.
Operating detail to be confirmed with the tour operator — schedules, prices and pickup points are being finalised. Until then, use the enquiry page and we will confirm your day personally.
One day on this water will rewrite what "a day out" means.
