Anna Bay Sandboarding
The desert that walks toward the sea.
The dunes
The largest moving coastal dunes in the Southern Hemisphere
The Worimi sand mass at Anna Bay stretches along the coast in a mobile ridge line about 32 kilometres long — sand that genuinely migrates westward a few metres every year. From the crest you get the strange, wonderful sight of green bush on one side and open sand sea falling away to the beach on the other.
Boarding is the simple joy: 4WD to the crest, sit, point it downhill, laugh. It needs no skill and delivers immediately — which is why it works for eight-year-olds and eight-timers alike.
- Included: sandboards and 4WD dune access with the licensed operator.
- Time: about three hours including the drive in.
- Sand truth: you will find sand in your shoes for a week. Accept it early.
Culture note
The dunes have custodians
The stockton dune field sits on Worimi Country and the sand holds middens and artifacts going back thousands of years. The licensed operators work under Worimi agreements — which is the right way to ride a moving landscape. Treat the dunes like the living site they are.
