The day
A day that starts before the coffee and ends with salt on your shoulders 06:30 Depart Sydney Wharf pick-up, coffee in hand. The coast road north while the city sleeps. The coach takes the coastal run with one early comfort stop — you're at the marina before the town wakes up.
09:15 Nelson Bay — cruise departure Boarding at the marina. The marine park doles out its regulars: bottlenose dolphin pods riding the bow wave. The cruise runs about 90 minutes past Yacaaba Head. Watch the wake line — that's where the pod's surfers hang out.
12:00 Tomaree Head — the climb 161 vertical metres to the best panorama on this stretch of coastline. Bring the legs. Guided and paced — the stairway is steep but nobody's racing. The view from the gun emplacement is the day's still-life.
14:30 Anna Bay — the dunes Sandboarding down the largest moving coastal dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. 4WD up, gravity down. Boards supplied. The dune field moves about four metres a year — the landscape is literally never the same twice.
16:30 Nelson Bay — oysters & golden hour Fresh local oysters on the foreshore as the light goes amber over the bay. The shucking sheds supply half of Sydney. Eat them where they were opened.
18:30 Return to Sydney Salt hair, sand in shoes, camera roll full. Home around 21:00 with dinner stops en route for the hungry.
