Plan Your Visit
Everything to know before the coast road does its thing.
Getting there
About two and a half hours, done well
Sydney to Nelson Bay runs about 2.5 hours in honest traffic: M1 north past the Hawkesbury, exit at Hexham onto the Pacific Highway run, then the tourist drive across to the bay. Leave by 6:30 and the whole trip runs ahead of the traffic — arriving while the marina coffee is still being made.
- By car: the route above; weekends add time from the Central Coast on.
- Without a car: our day tours cover every transfer — the coastal drive included, windows seat included.
Seasons
What the bay is like through the year
- Summer (Dec–Feb): warm water, busy town, early starts matter.
- Autumn (Mar–May): the locals' favourite — mild, clear, calm mornings. Superb walking light.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): cold mornings, glassy afternoons; dolphins do not mind the season at all.
- Spring (Sep–Nov): whale season plus the first warm days — arguably the region's most rewarding window.
